Don’t be alarmed by the skull, it’s just the logo for La Carnita, a here today and gone tomorrow TACO joint that pops up magically on random days in Toronto. Driven by my appetite for tasty tacos and laziness (it only took 2 mins to get there), I joined my co-workers for a unique lunch experience.
The concept: Buy limited edition artwork, get three limited edition tacos for only $10. For more details, all you had to do was follow them on twitter: @la_carnita. Their tweets would eventually alert you to when and where they were going to pop up next.
When we got to the designated space – One Method - a digital + design shop, there was a huge line. I was also worried when I found out La Carnita was only selling 150 tacos and that was it. Luckily I was #136. After an hour of waiting in a hot stairway we finally got our tacos. Three small creations of which two were amazing. Didn’t much care for the Achiote Chicken taco. I was also impressed by the amazing decor at One Method. I felt like a really cool kid waiting in the cafeteria line hoping a food fight would start.
SO WHAT? Waiting in line for a pop up food stand is totally worth it. I was really delighted with my meal. I also got an awesome piece of art designed by Shingo.ca as a takeaway. What more could I ask for? Oh yeah, not to have waited for an hour in the hot hot heat, but hey, once in a while on a slow workday with cool co-workers, it’s ok to make some time for a different kind of lunch experience. Move over McDonald’s and Freshii, I’ll be on the hunt for La Carnita again. Next time I’ll bring a lawn chair to sit in while I wait.
